what is the moss meadow school?
Moss Meadow School is a small, country day school for 65 gifted children, ages 4 and up. We have Pre-K through grade 12. There are parent and child workshops for ages 0-4. Children under 4 will always be accompanied by their parents. The school has applied for accreditation through the State of Virginia through the VCPE (Virginia Council for Private Education) as an accredited non public elementary and secondary school. The curriculm itself is nationally accredited. High school diplomas are awarded on completion of an approved curriculum.
how does the school service gifted children?
We service gifted children in a beautiful, natural setting. Moss Meadow School has a seven acre campus with a pond, forest, barnyard, playground, and fenced swimming pool. At birth you knew your child was gifted and talented! You were right! Howard Gardner (an educational psychologist) identified seven different intelligences - academic giftedness is two of the seven (verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical). We service academically gifted children through an independent study method. They can move ahead through their curriculum at an accelerated pace. Our culture and schools generally focus on the above two intelligences. We also service children who are gifted in the other five categories: bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, musical, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. All children possess wonderful gifts. Our program will encourage their gifts.
do home school children attend the school?
Home-school families are welcome to attend the school on a part time basis.
do un-schooled children attend the school?
Yes, our philosophy is a good fit for the unschooled child. The child can choose quiet activity in the morning, without choosing a curriculum. The parents also have the option of registering the child for the afternoon program only.
